Things To See and Do - Our Staff Favorites
There is lots to see and do along Nova Scotia's Northumberland Shore, all within less than an hour's drive in any direction from Stonehame. Make Stonehame your destination and when you aren't relaxing on Fitzpatrick Mountain, take day trips to the many wonderful experiences in Central and Northern Nova Scotia. Or go further and take a ferry ride to the pristine province of Prince Edward Island for a day, or to the exciting city of Halifax. Either way, Stonehame is the place to call your home base on your next Nova Scotia vacation. Listed below are some of our recommended "must-do's".
Pictou Island Ferry Service
PICTOU ISLAND CHARTERS is located only a 15 minute drive from Stonehame and offers an authentic Nova Scotia experience... The M/V Cetacean Search has been Transport Canada certified to carry 36 passengers on voyages in the Northumberland Strait. In the waters of the Northumberland Strait lies a small island named Pictou Island. The M/V Cetacean Search leaves Caribou and travels to Pictou island located between Nova Scotia and PEI. Pictou Island is full of beautiful sandy beaches, which the community is commited to preserve for future generations. Anchors Above Zipline Adventures
Anchor’s Above Zipline Adventures, located only 45 minutes from Stonehame, boasts two ziplines. Leaving the parking lot and ticket booth, you will hike to the first platform where trained staff will get you into your safety gear (all provided by AAZA). Once safely equipped you will be hooked to the 1,100 ft awe inspiring monster line 240 ft above the ground that drops nearly six stories to the second line that is 900 ft long and 190ft off the ground. This line drops nearly 10 stories returning you safely to the parking lot/ticket booth where you started. All in all, this adventure packs quite the bang for your buck!!

Jost Vineyards
Jost Vineyards, only a 30 minute drive from Stonehame, is found along the picturesque Northumberland Strait, just off the Sunrise Trail in Malagash, Nova Scotia. Jost Vineyards welcomes visitors year round to its winery store and vineyards. Growing exceptional grapes in Malagash is made possible by the warm waters of the Northumberland Strait. Sugar Moon Farm
Sugar Moon Farm, only 25 minutes from Stonehame, is Nova Scotia’s Award-Winning Year Round Maple Syrup Farm and Dining Experience. Learn about the history and craft of maple sugaring in the sugar camp. Hike, ski or snowshoe up to the sugar woods. Enjoy their Maple Brunch all day in the log pancake house and check out their maple store. Come with family and friends during the day or come to Chef’s Night at Sugar Moon. Lismore Sheep Farm Wool Shop
Lismore Sheep Farm Wool Shop is located 25 minutes from Stonehame, just off the Sunrise Trail (Route 6), along the beautiful Northumberland Shore in River John. It is a working sheep farm with about 300 sheep. At Lismore Sheep Farm they use wool to create a wide range of products, some of which include ~ wool blankets, wool filled comforters, wool mattress pads, yarn, hand knit sweaters, socks, hats, mitts, etc. They also carry a variety of sheepskin products ~ mitts, slippers, seatbelt covers, dusters, insoles. Their washable sheepskins have proven to be extremely popular for a variety of uses, some of which include ~ floor rug, chair cover, motorcycle seat, wheelchairs, etc. The farm is also the home of the River John Needle Company, their new venture making wooden knitting needles. During the summer the barn is open for visitors to see the sheep and lambs up close. There is also an interpretive display that will interest all ages.
Tatamagouche Creamery Square
The Tatamagouche Creamery Square is only a 30 minute drive from Stonehame and is located within the pristine village of Tatamagouche on the historic waterfront and adjacent to both the Sunrise Trail and Trans-Canada walking trail. Creamery Square is destined to become a regional star attraction and vital community resource. Creamery Square provides a unique and engaging mix of activities and experiences. The new Farmers’ Market building already provides a vibrant facility for local food producers, artisans and customers with over 17,000 visitors in 2007. The newly renovated Creamery building will reopen in summer 2009 as a truly innovative and interactive Heritage Centre combining several community museums including the Anna Swan Collection, the Brule Fossils, the Sunrise Trail Museum, the North Shore Archives, a Creamery exhibit as well as research facilities and a gift shop.
Balmoral Grist Mill Museum
Discover this wonderful three-storey grist mill, an example of an early water-powered mill, tucked away in a wooded gorge on Matheson's Brook near Tatamagouche. Wheat, oats, and buckwheat are ground and sifted just as they have been since Alexander McKay opened the mill in 1874. Bring a picnic and linger in this shady and peaceful place. Hear the mill stream splashing as water tumbles over the dam, powering the overshot waterwheel. Ramble along the 1-km Christene MacDonald Walking Trail.
Hector Heritage Quay Museum and Ship Hector
Located only 15 minutes from Stonehame in the historic town of Pictou, The Hector Heritage Quay is one of Nova Scotia's major cultural tourist attractions. Through the depiction of the story of Scottish migration to the New World, the Hector Heritage Quay introduces visitors to the history and culture of the area. A series of imaginative and informative displays retell the story of the Ship Hector voyage in 1773. The centerpiece of the attraction is a full scale reproduction of the ship Hector. This three masted, fully rigged ship is found on Pictou's historic waterfront. Hear the sizzling sounds of the working blacksmith's forge, and the rhythm of the mallets and chisels of the ship's carpenters, discover the works of the resident artist which depicts the story of the voyage and reconstruction of the ship Hector. Also on location, the Ship Hector Company Story featuring items built on site and official memorabilia.
Northumberland Fisheries Museum
The Northumberland Fisheries Museum,located in only 12 kms from Stonehame on the Pictou waterfront, is currently housed in a former Canadian National Railway Station in downtown Pictou. It was built in 1904 and passenger trains came through the area until th 1950's. The museum has been located here since 1978, however, due to a devastating fire in 1996 the building remained closed for three years.
Although there have been some changes over the years the goal of the museum remains the same. The museum is here to pay tribute to the hardworking fisher folk of the Northumberland Strait who have made fishing into the great industry it is today.
Construction on the Pictou waterfront is currently underway. The lighthouse replica is almost completed and should be readily accessible by mid July or early August.
The three phase project will see the completion of a new museum and connect the lighthouse and hatchery into one large exhibit.
Grohmann Knives
Handcrafted Grohmann Knives are recognized around the world for their beauty, balance and quality. They have won more than 25 international honors including a display at the New York's prestigious Museum of Modern Art. Grohmann Knives: used by hunters and chefs for over 45 years and still going strong. They are located at 116 Water Street in Pictou, only 15 minutes from Stonehame. Tours are available.
Sherbrooke Village
Sherbrooke Village in located only 90 minutes from Stonehame and depicts a typical Nova Scotian village from 1860 to pre-WW1. With approximately 80 buildings, over 25 of those open to the public, it is the largest Nova Scotia Museum site. Visit the woodturner shop, blacksmith, pottery shop, and printery. During your visit, enjoy a delicious, light meal at the What Cheer Tea Room located within the Village. Built on an economy of ship building, lumbering and gold mining, Sherbrooke Village reflects Nova Scotia as it was during its industrial boom in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Visit a place where time has stood still... visit Historic Sherbrooke Village.
PEI Ferry
The Prince Edward Island Ferry is located only 15 kms by car from Stonehame. Northumberland Ferries offers what is simply the best way for you and your car to travel between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The Confederation and the Holiday Island Ferries proudly ply the waters between Caribou and Wood Islands in just 75 minutes-and, in the process, offers you a unique opportunity to park the car, relax and enjoy the beauty of the sea and the sky. Tidal Bore Rafting Park and Cottages
Join Tidal Bore Rafting Park & Cottages for their 26th year of tidal rafting and outdoor adventure in Nova Scotia. Located only a 60 minute drive from Stonehame, they are one of the most picturesque and unique rafting companies in Canada, offering the world famous tidal bore rafting on the Shubenacadie River and Bay of Fundy, home to the world's highest tides. Selected as one of the top five rivers in Canada by Lonely Planet, the Shubenacadie River and Tidal Bore Rafting Park are awesome places to come raft.
